This type of landscape was inspirational to English eighteenth century connoisseurs and collectors. They admired the dramatic gloom of threatening skies, and shattered trees. Here the landscape is populated by banditti who were a menace to honest travellers.  Pictures of this type are difficult to date as the artist produced them throughout his long career.
