This carefully painted small-scale picture has every appearance of being the modello for the great altarpiece painted by Seghers for the Jesuit Church at Kortrijk in 1620, which was acquired by the Louvre in Paris, in 1990. The general style of the painting, however, is much closer to Simon de Vos to whom the picture was attributed in the 2003 sale. This suggests that Seghers was strongly under the influence of De Vos before his work became distinctly Caravaggesque in the 1620s.
