The Magdalen holding the crown of Thorns

Rubens, Peter Paul (1577-1640)

The treatment of the theme of the Penitent Magdalen, although common in 17th century art, is unusual in this instance, as she is shown still in her rich attire, but holding Christ’s Crown of Thorns. The scriptures in her hand also indicate that she is at the point of penitence.
