The inclusion of a continuous narrative in a single work of art is often found in Netherlandish fifteenth century painting, but is increasingly rare by the mid sixteenth century. The extensive landscape may not be by Mostaert himself, who seems to have specialised almost entirely in figures. Van Mander noted that two landscape painters lived with Mostaert, Gillis van Coninxloo (1544-1607) and Hans Soens (1547-1614). It is not yet clear whether another artist was involved in painting the extensive landscape although Mostaert was responsible for a small number of pure landscapes including the Fire at Night in the Louvre, Paris.
