Le parc et la villa Grecque d'Auguste Saladin de Loubières à Prégny

Topffer, Adam (1766-1847)

The scene depicts the villa designed by the Italian architect Luigi Bagutti (Rovigo c1778 – died after 1829) built in the period 1822 – 1825 for Auguste Saladin de Lubières.  The picture was commissioned in 1826. The owner’s daughters are depicted in the foreground. The villa is set in what was then a fashionable garden à l'anglaise. The villa and its setting were not destined to last long as in 1857 the whole was reconstructed by Baron Adolph de Rothschild.  The picture is painted in a self-consciously neo-classical style.  The trees are stylised and the tonal emphasis unnatural in the relationship between the dense blue sky and the rest of the landscape.
