Moses receiving the Tablets of the Law

West, Benjamin (1738-1820)

These two pictures formed part of a decorative scheme painted for the Fitzroy Chapel in Fitzroy Square, which was destroyed in 1945. Relatively few such pictures survive, as most of them became the victims of Victorian re-organisation of church and chapel interiors. These two works have also long been considered to be by West’s most gifted pupil, Gilbert Stuart (1755 – 1828). It is, however, likely that the pictures are by West, as they are signed by him and the Moses receiving the Tablets of the Law appears in the background of Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of Benjamin West in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
