From the costume it would appear that the portrait dates from the last years of the artist’s life and may even been as late as c1830. The artist has modified his neoclassical severity. He has painted the sitter in a much softer style than his earlier work, reducing the hard polished effects of his Bonaparte portraits. The intimacy of the portrait suggests that the sitter may have belonged to the artist’s close circle rather than as the subject of an official commission.
