Portrait of a man

Schöpfer, Hans, the Elder (c.1505-69)

Although unsigned, these two pictures, which form a pair, have long been attributed to Schöpfer, who was Court painter to Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria. They are also useful for the historian as they are dated, giving a clear idea of the severe types of costume preferred at the time, almost certainly because of the introduction of Protestantism. There is no indication of the exact status or profession of the sitters.  The man holds a white handkerchief, which seems to have been popular through the sixteenth century.
