Portrait of a man wearing a cravat

Drolling, Michel-Martin (1786-1851)

This portrait is an early work by Drolling, painted when he was only twenty three and still under the influence of his master Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825).  The artist had retained a level of neoclassical purity in his approach.  The sitter is wearing the high collar fashionable for a short time during the Napoleonic period.
