This painting is a version by Gérard of one which was commissioned by the sitter’s husband, Charles Gilbert de Morel-Vindé (1759-1842) and passed by descent in the family until sold to the Francisco Art Museums in 1979. The picture here is likely to have been commissioned at approximately the same time for another member of the family.
