St. Jerome is shown here in his study, exactly as in the other image by this artist, but here the lion and Cardinal’s hat have been added, which is a traditional attribute of the Saint, who is believed to have pulled a thorn out of the lion’s paw. This composition is far less dependent on the Dürer’s prototype, but is repeated much more often by Reymerswaele’s workshop and even more frequently by later followers and imitators. One version in the Musée des Beaux-Arts at Bordeaux is dated 1600.The Latin inscription on the Gospel Book is taken from St. Matthew, Chapter 25 ‘When the Son of Man shall come in his glory, and all the Holy Angels with him, and then shall he sit upon the Throne of his Glory’. The illumination of the other side of the page depicts The Last Judgement.
