The treatment of the subject follows the standard late sixteenth-century tradition.  The Archangel Gabriel is depicted on a bed of cloud which symbolises his arrival from Heaven and he holds the lily, the symbol of purity.  In the sky above, the Holy Dove is seen surrounded by light and a Host of Angels.  This was a modification to the Bible story brought about by the Council of Trent’s emphasis on the proximity of Heaven.
