The marriage at Cana

Coignet, Gillis (1535-99)

The subject is taken from St. John’s Gospel. The miracle of Christ turning the water into wine at a wedding feast, when the supply ran out, was regarded as significant because it was the first of Christ’s recorded miracles. The subject became very popular in the Renaissance and pictures of this type were often placed in refectories. The artist was for a short time the master of Cornelis van Haarlem (q.v.). The bold and colourful treatment of the figures with their mannerist poses points to the strong influence of Coignet on Cornelis van Haarlem.
