The mystic marriage of St. Catherine of Siena

Fontana, Lavinia (1552-1614)

The subject is also depicted by Il Bagnacavallo the main difference being the inclusion of the figure of Joseph in the background. The artist has also emphasised the idea that the Saint was seeing the Holy Family as a vision, whereas Bagnacavallo preferred to incorporate the Saint in an intimate scene.  On stylistic grounds, the picture is likely to be a late work when the artist was already aware of the innovations of Annibale Carracci.
