La femme à l'ombrelle

Monticelli, Adolphe Joseph Thomas (1824-86)

Monticelli’s distinctive style remained consistent throughout his career and his pictures are therefore very difficult to date. He used a heavy impasto to achieve his three-dimensional effects. This gave his figures a strong sense of movement as in many of the artist’s pictures figures have no particular defined purpose. They exist as patterns of colour, their faces indistinct.
