This is a very good example of the type of painting practised in Antwerp on the eve of the iconoclastic crisis of the 1560s. Such pictures were largely use for devotional use, owing to their relatively small dimensions. Such pictures represent the end of this type of Netherlandish tradition as begun by Rogier van der Weyden in the 1440s.
