Wooded landscape with Apollo and Daphne

Dughet, Gaspard Poussin (1615-75)

The subject from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which  involved Daphne’s transformation into a tree as a result of her being pursued by Apollo, was much favoured by landscapists. In this instance, it is likely that the figures were added by another hand as they are so conspicuous. When Dughet added his own figures to his pictures they were usually much more discreet. In this instance, the figures are traditionally attributed to Filippo Lauri (1623-1694).
