Venus and Aeneas

Perrier, Francois (Bourguignon) (1590-1650)

Venus appears to Aeneas in disguise as a huntress. Her purpose is to show Aeneas and Achates his trail to the Palace of Dido. It is likely that this picture is a late work, executed just before the artist finally left Italy. The landscape elements show a strong influence of Salvator Rosa whereas the figures are more akin to those of  Simon Vouet.
