L'eau

Lancret, Nicolas (1690-1743)

This picture represents one of the four elements, Earth, Fire, Air and Water. Here Water is personified by an idealised depiction of fishing. The setting is a mill pond, and the water wheel of the mill itself is visible in the background. The serious fisherman wields a large net and the bountiful results are already visible in the foreground. The lady on the right, however, uses the more genteel rod and line. The standing male figure on the left is derived from the work of Antoine Watteau both in pose and costume.
