Portrait of a young man dressed as a bridegroom

Heusler, Antonius (fl.1525-1561)

Although the sitter is unidentified, the date of 1535 is of importance in the chronology of this type of painting, in the circle of Lucas Cranach (q.v.).  The young sitter, aged twenty-one, is wearing what is identifiable as the symbolic shirt of a bridegroom. The symbolism is also continued in the flower he holds and the garland on his head. The landscape background is very freely painted, giving an impression of distance, contrasting so well with the precision of the portrait itself.  In its clarity of drawing, especially the face, the influence of Cranach is visible.
