The sitter achieved some posthumous fame as he was one of the few who advocated the return of the Elgin Marbles to Greece should the conditions arise when it was possible to do so. Hammersley was the son of Thomas Hammersley, Banker to the Prince of Wales and was also the nephew of Charles Greenwood.
