Portrait of Monsieur Jean-Joseph Hurard

Largilliere, Nicolas de (1656-1746)

This portrait still belongs to the seventeenth century tradition, typified by the work of Pierre Mignard. Although the clothes are opulent, the general approach is restrained. This is symbolic of the new approach seen in French painting in the first years of the eighteenth century when the opulence of the reign of Louis XIV was already becoming unfashionable.
