The sitter was the youngest brother of the celebrated divine, Richard Robinson DD, successively Bishop of Killala, Bishop of Ferns, Bishop of Kildare and Archbishop of Armagh and also Baron Rokeby in the Irish Peerage in 1777. The Archbishop was a personal friend of Reynolds and it is possibly by this connection that the sitter was painted.
