The ordeal of the Vestal Virgin Tucchia

Veen, Otto van (1558-1629)

The Vestal Virgins were in charge of the sacred flame in the Temple of Vesta in Rome. They had neither to lose their virginity, nor to allow the sacred flame to be extinguished.  In return for these responsibilities they received many privileges. If they failed to adhere to the rules, they were sentenced to death.
