St. Jerome is depicted as an old man, naked to the waist, with his translation of the bible into Latin later known as the Vulgate. St. Francis appears in the brown habit of the Order of Friars he founded. By contrast, St. Cecilia, in common with many third century AD Roman martyred saints, is essentially mythical. Her supposed relics were translated by Pope Paschal 1 circa 820 to the Roman church of S. Cecilia in Trastevere. It was only in the later middle ages that she became popular and it was not until as late as 1584 that she became the patron saint of musicians at the founding of the academy of music in Rome. Here she is shown with a small portable organ, with only nine stops.
