View of Amiens evening

Lepine, Stanislas Victor Edouard (1835-92)

This landscape is also Corot-like with its broad sweep of canal landscape and the distant silhouette of Amiens Cathedral. The building itself is the largest medieval Cathedral in France and was especially esteemed in the nineteenth century and became the source of much gothic revival building. It was also the subject of Ruskin’s study The Bible of Amiens (1884). Thus, to modernise a simple silhouette, in its time it would have been easily recognisable.
