It is likely that this picture is a mature work by the artist. The sitter has not been identified. The wide ruff of the old lady would suggest a date c1640 in the mid-seventeenth century. The type of ruff is seen most clearly in Rembrandt’s Portrait of Margaretha Trip of c1660 in the National Gallery, London. The old woman is reading the Bible although this is not immediately obvious.
