Moses and the brazen serpent

Backer, Jacob de the Elder(c.1555-c.1591)

The story of Moses and the brazen serpent is symbolic of ingratitude. The subject is taken from the Book of Numbers. The Israelites, disgruntled with their hardships in the desert, dared to complain both to God and to Moses. Their summary punishment was a plague of poison snakes, which was only later resolved by Moses. The mannerist treatment of the subject seems to show some French influence.
