Portrait of Jules Claretie (1840 - 1913)

Henner, Jean-Jacques (1829-1905)

The sitter was a friend of the artist and he also wrote a biography of the painter in 1878. Claretie was a well known critic and man of letters and was also administrator of the Comédie Française in Paris. In the treatment of the fall of light, the artist’s indebtedness to the Italian Renaissance is obvious.
