It appears that Bidauld executed many of his finished Italian landscapes long after his sojourn there in the years 1785-1790. He based these later pictures on sketches made on site, which are now much sought after for their freshness and realism. The finished pictures were always much more contrived, both in composition and atmosphere. With their carefully balanced compositions, the two pictures complement each another as the horizon lines form a distinct rhythm even when reversed in their hanging.
