Lamentation over Dead Christ

Cranach, Lucas the Elder (1472-1553)

Cranach’s rather stiff approach to the subject, with the hieratic poses, is based on the influence of late medieval sculpture, where the main figures are grouped to form the maximum dramatic effect. The facial expressions are also reminiscent of German late gothic sculpture, which reached a high point with such artists as Tilman Riemenschneider (c.1460-1531).
