Norwegian

Northern landscape with a waterfall

Dahl, Johan Christian (1788-1857)

This is an early work by Dahl, painted just before he left Norway, and thus before he came into contact with Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) with whom he shared a house in Dresden after 1823. The picture proves how well the young artist responded to the drama of the Norwegian landscape with its melancholy colours and brooding atmosphere.
