Landscape with shepherds before Bethlehem

Hildebrandt, Eduard (1818-69)

This is a good example of Hildebrandt’s broad approach to what was to Western European eyes still an exotic landscape. Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire and the Holy places were largely inaccessible to all but the most intrepid. The influence of English landscape painting of the earlier nineteenth century is apparent, it came through the artist’s French teacher, Eugène Isabey, himself heavily dependent on the English.
