Pastoral landscape with peasants and a harvest wagon

De Marne, Jean Louis (Marnette) (1744-1829)

As is often the case with De Marne, the artist has continued the Dutch seventeenth century tradition of figures in a landscape. He has used considerable finesse in the painting of both the landscape and the figures, although the scale is rather larger than most seventeenth century pictures of this type. The placing of an elaborately painted tree on one side of the composition is also a Dutch seventeenth century convention.
