On stylistic grounds, this painting could have been compared to the Portrait of a man of 1559 in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (inv. no. 2920, oil on panel 45 x 35.5cm), but the dendrochronological examination ruled this out as the picture can be no earlier than the 1620s. It is not yet clear whether this is a 17th century copy of a painting which is now lost, or whether it is a much later falsification, using a 17th century panel.
