Portrait of a man with a letter

Passarotti, Bartolomeo (1529-92)

The severe expression, austere dress, and bold composition are all typical of the pictures painted in Northern Italy in the last quarter of the 16th century.  The sitter has not been identified and he may have been a lawyer, as he is holding a paper. The picture can now be attributed to Passarrotti whose work was remarkably similar to other artists working at the time especially Lavinia Fontana.
