Raeburn excelled at this type of full-length portrait in which he was able to give the sitter an entirely convincing dignity and stature. Yet the sitter is shown in an informal pose holding his pipe in one hand and gloves in the other. His status is confirmed both by his dress and by the elaborate table and urn in the background.
