Portrait of Lady Geary née Grant

Grant, Francis (1803-78)

This pair of portraits is an example of a Victorian couple, not only painted as a commission, but also showing unexpected intimacy because Lady Geary was the artist’s daughter.  There is an additional poignancy as the sitter had died young and the artist had painted posthumously.  Also in evidence is Grant’s ability as a portraitist which was to earn him the Presidency of the Royal Academy.
