Portrait of Sir John Skynner (1723 - 1805)

Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-88)

The sitter was a distinguished lawyer, rising to become Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer in 1777 and receiving a knighthood at the same time. The painting is likely to have been executed in 1785, as it was in this year that at least two of the three other versions known were commissioned. The powerful red of the sitter’s robes was part of his official garb but the artist obviously responded to its intensity.
