The sitter was already elderly when he sat to Reynolds in 1755. The rather stiff pose and formal landscape are typical of Reynolds in his early years as a successful portraitist. At this stage in his career, there is, however, nothing to distinguish him from the older generation of portrait painters such as Ramsay.
