River landscape

Pynacker, Adam (1622-73)

In common with most of Pijnacker’s landscape, the setting is imaginary. The topography appears northern rather than Italian, especially as the castle on the hill is partly based on Bentheim castle which was on the eastern boundary of the Netherlands and the German states and a site favoured by Jacob van Ruisdael.
