St. Augustine of Hippo was one of the most influential of Early Christian writers even though some of his views have remained controversial. He believed that the unbaptised could never achieve salvation. Most of Augustine’s long career was spent as Bishop of Hippo in North Africa. His shrine was at Pavia in Northern Italy. The Saint is depicted in his Bishop’s robes but it is not clear whether this Bishop is St. Augustine of Hippo or St. Ambrose.
