St. Jerome in the wilderness of Chalcis

Faccini, Pietro (1560/2-1602)

This picture probably dates from the end of the artist’s short career, when he was still under the influence of Annibale Carracci 1560-1609). This influence shows in the dark tones of the landscape setting and the strongly drawn figure of the Saint.  He is depicted in the wilderness of Chalcis where he retired in order to learn the Hebrew language, so that he could translate the scriptures directly from their original language into Latin, rather than using the later Greek texts from which most translations of the scriptures had been derived.
