The Conversion of Saul

Giordano, Luca (1634-1705)

This is one of many versions executed by the artist in several different formats, and their relationships have not yet been fully understood.  The large compositions of this subject were painted by the artist at the end of his career in Spain and the subject was given a pendant, The Death of Julian the Apostate painted for the Casita del Principe in the Escorial outside Madrid. The subject was favoured both in the renaissance and the 17th century.  Saul on the road to Damascus, in order to persecute the Christians, was blinded by light from Heaven and converted to Christianity.
