The subject is unusual in late eighteenth century painting although it was much favoured by Baroque artists. West painted the subject no fewer than three times and exhibited one of them at the Royal Academy in 1771. It is thought that the model for Tobit was the professional “Old George” White, who appears to have been used by West in the 1770s.
