This picture forms part of a small group of Suffolk landscapes by Gainsborough, most of which are influenced by Dutch seventeenth century landscape painting, with which Gainsborough was almost certainly familiar in local East Anglian collections. Although Gainsborough lacked the skill and precision of his Dutch counterparts, he was able to add an airy breath of his own which so often captures the atmosphere of his native Suffolk.
