The sitter remains unknown but he is likely to have been a Netherlander owing to the date inscribed on the contemporary frame round the picture. In common with many other sitters at the time he holds a pair of gloves, and on his index finger is a gold signet ring set with a precious stone which suggests that he was a man of some substance.
