Portrait of gentleman with his hand resting on a sculpture of Cupid

Netscher, Caspar (1639-84)

The sitter of this carefully painted small-scale portrait remains unidentified.  A possible clue to his identity has now to be abandoned as the copy of the painting by Daniel Haringh in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam is now no longer thought to be Johan van Bochoven (1624-1693). The picture falls into the category of elegant portraiture with the slightly freer brushwork which is found in the last phase of the artist’s career.  The statue in the background is probably a Venus and Cupid and the  sculpture on the lower left is also of Cupid playing.
