Portrait of a man

Denner, Balthasar (1685-1749)

This beautifully painted image of an old man shows the inspiration of Rembrandt’s early work where there is strong emphasis on the wrinkled face. Such careful realism was not usually in fashion in Europe in the eighteenth century, but was easily sustainable when the artist was imitating the much esteemed style of the previous century.
