Portrait of a Lady Jane Sanwell

Janssen van Ceulen, Cornelius (1593-1661)

This is a good example of standard portrait painting in the last years of the reign of King James I (died 1625), where there is not yet any influence of either Rubens or Van Dyck on this type of portraiture. The feigned oval was also much favoured in this period. The sitter is shown in the height of fashion, which is relatively austere, especially when compared with the late Elizabethan love of colour.
